Opportunities
Integration of Joint Technology Office (JTO)-sponsored atmospheric models into RHDO High Energy Laser
(HEL) collateral effects models Students would become familiar with atmospheric propagation models and assess
the importance of including atmospherics in analysis. For example, direct beam hazards would be affected
by thermal blooming that can be predicted through the model. Beam size on a rocket, artillery or mortar
target would be affected in the same way and shorten the scattered-energy hazard distance.
Integration of RHDO models into JTO and Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL)-sponsored packages
Many trade studies for conceptual HEL systems are being implemented through modeling and simulation.
A student would work up modules that transition probabilistic risk-based approaches to collateral
effects/threat assessment/test safety from RHDO to the HEL community. These modules could then be
added to existing models to augment their capabilities.
Thermal lensing in high-power optics
The RHDO codes used for thermal lensing in the eye can be applied to the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT)
experimental work for simulating optical aberrations. A student would look at the degree to which the adaptive
optics system was able to compensate tor thermal lensing in initial work conducted at RHDO on an artificial
eye (experiment) and simulate with our codes, or simply apply our codes to the data, collaborating with AFIT.
