Jumper, Marquet, Stickley New DEPS Fellows

Rheinmetall Demonstrates High Energy Laser Weapons

Rheinmetall Defence has demonstrated high energy laser weapons at 1 kW and 10 kW power levels. The two were mounted on military ground vehicles and demonstrated in air defense, counter rocket, artillery and mortar, and other roles. More.



Boeing Team Receives Contract for High Power Adaptive Optics System

Boeing and SAIC recently completed the first phase of development by designing, building and testing a high energy adaptive optics system in a laboratory environment. Under this new contract, the team will test the system with the High Energy Laser Technology Demonstrator (HEL TD), a cornerstone high-energy laser program for the U.S. Army. ONR Co-Sponsors Directed Energy Symposium

The Office of Naval Research is co-sponsoring the fourteenth Annual Directed Energy Symposium in La Jolla, California on 14-18 November. U.S. House Creates Directed Energy Caucus

Lasers Featured at AFOSR 60th Anniversary Celebration

Dr. Robert Byer of Stanford University reviewed critical achievements in laser science as part of the 60th anniversary celebration of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). Dr. Byer's contributions to laser science include the demonstration of the first tunable visible parametric oscillator and development of the Q-switched unstable resonator Nd YAG laser. More.



Rear Admiral Klunder Becomes Chief of Naval Research on 17 November

Barnes Receives UK Ministry of Defence Special Commendation Coin

AFRL Directed Energy Directorate Signs Agreement with Museums

Boeing Supports BAE Systems on Navy Integrated DE Weapon System

AFIT Teaches High Energy Laser Weapon Systems Short Course

Faculty of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) Center for Directed Energy are teaching a short course on high energy laser weapon systems. This distance-learning offering will start on 12 September and run through 23 October. The course offers 3.2 CEU to successful students. More.



DEPS Explores Opportunities to Save the Airborne Laser Laboratory from Scrap
Albuquerque, New Mexico (posted: 22 July 2011)

The historic Airborne Laser Laboratory (ALL) was the first aircraft to demonstrate lethal irradiance on airborne targets. In the early 90's it was flown from Kirtland AFB to the Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson AFB Ohio, with the expectation it would be maintained and displayed as a historic landmark. Unfortunately, the AF Museum leadership has now decided to turn the aircraft in for scrap. DEPS is exploring opportunities to save the ALL from this fate. More.



Los Alamos National Laboratory Threatened by Fire; Town Evacuated

Los Alamos National Laboratory remains closed as the Las Conchas fire approaches the southwest corner of the Laboratory grounds. The town of Los Alamos was evacuated yesterday. High Energy Laser Technology Demonstrator Integration Complete

NRL Scientists Demonstrate High-Efficiency Ceramic Laser

Applied Energetics Receives Phase II SBIR

Applied Energetics has received a $746,000 Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Phase II award to pursue its "Nested high Voltage" insulation geometry. McCasland Succeeds Pawlikowski at AFRL

Boeing to Develop High Brightness Laser

MLD Test Demonstrates Potential Ship Self-Defense Capability

AFIT CDE, Notre Dame Successfully Test AAPT

ONR, LANL Achieve FEL Milestone

Scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in New Mexico have achieved a remarkable breakthrough with the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Free Electron Laser (FEL) program. They demonstrated an injector capable of producing the electrons needed for a megawatt-class laser beam for the Navy's next generation weapon system. Dr. Dinh Nguyen, project leader for the LANL FEL program, and Quentin Saulter, ONR program manager, are both DEPS members. More.
