The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Directed Energy Directorate is hosting a Career Opportunities Workshop
on 5 December 2013 at 1:00pm at 2350 Alamo Ave SE, Albuquerque, NM 87106.
This will be a time for students to interact with AFRL Scientists and Engineers about possible near-term opportunities covering
several areas of engineering and physics. Interested students should bring their resumes and unofficial transcripts.
They are most interested in MS and PhD students, but there are a few prospects for BS level students. For more information,

Air Force Research Lab Seeks Sources of Laser Systems for Air Dominance

John Wachs Steps Down from DEPS Board of Directors

John Wachs has just left the DEPS Board of Directors after six years of
service, the maximum continuous period a Director can serve on the Board.
Executive Director Mark Neice expressed the gratitude of the Society for Wachs' service to DEPS.
Also at the November Board meeting, newly elected Directors Bill Decker, Mark
Henderson, David Kiel and Roger McGinnis assumed their seats on the Board.

Blankenship, Meyer Selected as New DEPS Fellows

DEPS Announces Revised 2014 Event Schedule

DEPS Delays Annual Directed Energy Symposium, 2014 Schedule to be Revised

In response to the recent government shut down, DEPS is delaying the 2013 Annual DE Symposium to 10-14 March 2014.
This delay will allow for the government participants to get travel approvals in place.
The schedule of 2014 events will be altered to accommodate this change; a new schedule will be published when available.

Decker, Henderson, Kiel, McGinnis Elected New DEPS Directors

DEPS President Tim Andreadis has congratulated the newly elected DEPS Directors: Bill Decker (DAU), Mark
Henderson (NAWC), David Kiel (Envisioneering) and Roger McGinnis (ONR), who will serve three year terms on the
DEPS Board of Directors beginning
this fall. There are four new Directors rather than the usual three due to a tie between two of the candidates.
John Wachs (SMDC) will be leaving the Board after six years, the longest a Director may serve continuously.

AFRL Updates Directed Energy Broad Agency Announcement for Universities

(BAA-RDK-2012-0001) and is actively soliciting proposals. The update (Amendment 3) includes new information about grant topics and contact information.
The scope of the research includes the entire spectrum of directed energy technology that is applicable to the Air Force,
including all tangentially-related directed energy research.

Army Scientists Collaborate for Stronger Laser Protection

Just as sunglasses protect the wearer's eyes from the ultraviolet rays of the summer sun, some materials
protect eyes and sensors from laser devices. U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) scientists are looking at
findings from university partners to determine which materials provide the most effective protection against lasers.
"Bringing new levels of protection from lasers to the Soldier requires the development of advanced materials as well
as new optical system designs," said Andy Mott, Laser Protection Team leader, ARL.

during a change of command ceremony at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force on 29 July.

Incoherent Laser Beam Combining Developed for DE Applications

Developed at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Plasma Physics Division, incoherent combining of high power fiber lasers
for directed energy (DE) weapons has proven effective in laser weapon systems (LaWS) prototypes now being
temporarily deployed onboard select Navy ships.
Based on architecture first proposed in 2005 by Dr. Phillip Sprangle, senior scientist, NRL Directed Energy Physics,
validation tests of incoherent laser beam combining began as early as 2008 by NRL researchers at the Starfire Optical
Range, Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. Dr. Sprangle is a DEPS Fellow.

Revised "Introduction to High Power Fiber Lasers" Published by DEPS

The second edition of "Introduction to High Power Fiber Laers", an updated review of current high-power
fiber laser technology, has been published by DEPS.
The second edition contains information on recent research to achieve increased output powers by
increasing the power of individual beams and by combining multiple beams. It also features new chapters
on fast beam propagation modeling and simulation for optical waveguides and free space. Sami Shakir
joined the original authors Andrew Motes and Richard Berdine for the revision.

Lockheed Martin Demonstrates ADAM Ground-Based Laser System

Lockheed Martin announced that it has successfully demonstrated the Area Defense
Anti-Munitions (ADAM) system in multiple tests against free-flying Qassam-like rocket
targets. The prototype laser system has destroyed eight small-caliber rocket targets
in flight at a range of approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) in tests
conducted in March and April 2013. Lockheed Martin is a DEPS

Lasers Bring New Urgency to Navy Electric Power Research

Navy to Deploy Laser Weapon System aboard Ponce

The Navy will deploy a high-energy, solid-state directed energy weapon early next year on board the
amphibious transport dock Ponce, Navy officials said Monday. This will be the first such deployment of the Navy’s

SPIE Publishes Special HEL Section of Optical Engineering

Perconti Heads ARL Sensors and Electronic Devices Directorate

Dr. Philip Perconti was recently named director of the U.S. Army Research Laboratory's
(ARL) Sensors and Electron Devices Directorate (SEDD). Prior to becoming director of SEDD,
Perconti was the director of the Science and Technology Division of the U.S. Army
Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center's Night Vision
and Electronic Sensors Directorate for 12 years. Directed energy work at ARL is pursued
in this directorate.

ARL Scientists Study Laser Vulnerability

Since 1983, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory's (ARL) Survivability/Lethality Analysis Directorate's (SLAD)
Electro-Optical Vulnerability Assessment Facility (EOVAF) has provided the resources
needed for SLAD to establish preeminence in the field of laser vulnerability analysis. SLAD personnel use the
EOVAF to analyze the vulnerability of optics to a full range of laser threats and evaluate the impact on the
survivability of the Soldier.
