DIRECTED ENERGY PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY

Fifth Annual Directed Energy Symposium
12-15 November 2002 Monterey, California

Directed Energy: Transforming America's Defense for the 21st Century
Held in part at the Naval Postgraduate School

In Cooperation with the
PMS-405, the Navy Directed Energy Weapons Office

The Fifth Annual Directed Energy Symposium brought together government, industry, and academic leaders for discussions of current programs, technology efforts, and the future of Directed Energy. Presentations covered a diverse spectrum from military laboratories, program offices, the intelligence community, industry, national laboratories, universities, policy makers, and scientific/engineering institutions. The Symposium provided both unclassified and classified forums for the exchange of technical information in fields related to the development, testing, and fielding of High Energy Laser (HEL) and High Power Microwave (HPM) systems.

Best Papers

The Best Paper Award is an annual award made by the Directed Energy Professional Society (DEPS) at each Annual Directed Energy Symposium. The Award is based on technical quality, presentation, and importance to the future of Directed Energy, as judged by a technical panel of experts selected by DEPS as part of the Symposium Organizing Committee. The awards include a tabletop trophy and a check for $500, provided by Brashear LP, a DEPS sponsor.

The best paper awards for this year are:

Best Laser Paper
Dr. Gon-Yen Shen (Goodrich Corporation), for his presentation "Dual-stage Deformable Mirror Development"

Best HPM Paper
Dr. Kirk Hackett (Air Force Research Laboratory Directed Energy Directorate), for his presentation "Active Denial System Technology."

Best Student Paper
Johnathan Neumann (University of Maryland), for his presentation "Laser Photocathode Driven Microbunching of FEL Applications".
