Results, Action Items, and Plan Forward from the 2023 HEL Optics Metrology Workshop

The second Optics Metrology workshop was held at the University of Alabama in Huntsville on October 4-5, 2023. The objective was to bring together various stakeholders involved in the metrology of optics for HEL systems to continue forging a common path forward in improving the metrology processes and technologies. These improvements are intended to support more efficient movement of defense HEL weapons systems from prototypes to deployed systems. 74 attendees from 35 different organizations participated, representing DoD, prime contractors, system integrators, subsystem suppliers, optics & coating manufacturers, metrology service providers, national labs, and universities. Presentations addressed current Army DE development and deployment status, the DE manufacturing industrial base, and detailed results from the 2022 metrology workshop. Presentations also addressed the latest in optical component manufacturing processes, process control, quality improvement and metrology for DE optical substrates and coatings. Finally, there were workshop presentations on lessons learned from prototype testing and system level design and specification practice. Panel discussions were held to address audience questions and facilitate discussion. Participants discussed areas in need of improvement, proposed potential means to increase DE optical metrology reliability, new means of collaboration between stakeholders, and ways to continue forging a common path forward to advance our common goals. A report is underway to record the major findings, suggested actions, and updates to the plan forward. We will present a summary of the report with the goals of moving ahead in this effort and increasing the number of stakeholders involved.
