Prismatic LiFePO4 Battery Magazines for Laser Applications

C&D Technologies has endeavored to develop advanced performance LiFePO4 batteries utilizing high current density prismatic LiFePO4 cells. In this technical presentation, we shall present our LiFePO4 high current density prismatic battery developments considered applicable and relevant to the HELIOS program; and, specifically, to the The US Navy initiative to use rechargeable “magazines” for lasers to neutralize drones (MDAA/FEBRUARY 22, 2024). The recent attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea have highlighted a significant problem: launching a $2 million air defense missile to stop a $2,000 drone is a bad trade. Not just financially, but also because warships carry a limited number of missiles. The US Navy wants to use compact lasers to shoot down cheap exploding drones. Rechargeable magazines could enable laser weapons to fire more shots before needing to cool. The concept has a lot of potential, but it may be hard to keep the system compact.
