Vertical Turbulence Profiling with Imaging and Wavefront Measurements

The strength of turbulence near the surface and variations with altitude above the surface are critical determining factors for the severity of laser propagation effects to elevated targets. We have tested new methods of integrating DELTA imaging and PROPS wavefront measurements with a UAS-mounted target board for turbulence profiling at varying target altitudes. For the sensor configuration used, the PROPS measurements give resolution and sensitivity in the first half of the path. The DELTA measurements provide additional sensitivity further out in the path. These tests give an opportunity to assess the validity of power-law scaling of turbulence strength with altitude and deviations from such a simplified model. The time scale of variations of turbulence at the surface is compared to the duration of typical altitude profiling in our UAS tests.
