Abstract: 24-Symp-069

UNCLASSIFIED, PUBLIC RELEASE

Overview of the Meteorological Assessment of Propagation of Laser Energy (MAPLE) experimental data collection event conducted at the Defense Research and Development Canada (DRDC) Valcartier Research Center.

A North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and cross-service experimental data collection event titled Meteorological Assessment of Propagation of Laser Energy (MAPLE) was conducted at the Defense Research and Development Canada (DRDC) Valcartier Research Center on June 5 to 16, 2023. Instrumentation was deployed to characterize the atmosphere and the propagation of a high energy laser (HEL) source over a 1.8 km optical path in a boreal forest environment. A comparable experiment was executed for a subtropical environment at the Townes Institute Science and Technology Experimentation Facility (TISTEF) in 2022. Presented here is an overview of the deployed instrumentation and quality-controlled data products by the High Energy Laser Measurement Support (HELMS) Laboratory at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) for MAPLE. A collaborative dataset has been established across different biomes to reinforce models and simulations with experimentally measured laser performance in known open-air atmospheric conditions.

Funded by the Naval Innovative Science & Engineering (NISE) Center for Direct Energy Innovation: Atmospheric Characterization for Laser Weapon Development and Operations.
