Modular Open System Architecture Solution for Pulsed High Energy Laser Weapons Capable of Group-III UAS Defeat

The primary threats associated with Group 1-3 UAS adversaries are attack asymmetry, enabling large amounts of damage to be delivered at very low costs, and advanced ISR capabilities. Overcoming these threats requires innovations in directed energy. In response to this need, new pulsed high energy laser lethality paradigms are being developed and demonstrated at Spectral Energies. Pulsed laser lethality offers significant advantages over CW engagement, primarily high peak irradiances over 10,000x greater than the most advanced CW sources. These extreme intensities provide access to more efficient ablation mechanisms than CW heating/vaporization and greatly reduce lethality timescales. The solid-state modular open system architecture (MOSA) pulsed laser design employed by Spectral Energies allows rapid scaling of pulse energy and repetition rate while maintaining broad pulse format engineering capabilities necessary to optimally exploit pulsed damage mechanisms. Recent demonstrations of sub-second, single-shot Group 1 & 2 UAS defeat will be presented along with initial assessments of failure mechanisms and laser scaling strategies for future demonstrations at range.
