Design of a Prototype HPM Source for UAV Deterrence

As the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for defensive applications continues to rise, rapid disruption or complete termination of these systems is required. UAVs can reach speeds above 160 km/h, making HPM sources an appealing method of UAV deterrence as HPM sources can be deployed immediately after detection and are not limited by speed, unlike projectile weapons. This research presents a novel prototype ultra-compact HPM source that utilizes parallel solid-state power amplifier modules combined with passive microwave structures. Each power amplifier is capable of achieving 10s of watts, making the total output of the prototype source in the range of 100s of watts. The output power of the source can be increased by employing higher-power RF transistors or simply increasing the number of power amplifiers in parallel. The size, weight, and scalability were of utmost importance when designing the proposed HPM source, as mobility and agility of the source were the primary focuses of this design, allowing the HPM source to be attached to a vertical lift vehicle.
