PHaSR Revisited: Considering Modern Technology for Handheld Laser Use Cases
PHaSR was a handheld laser weapon project in the 2000’s at AFRL/RD, funded by several government organizations. This talk reviews the laser technology used at the time for this project, in comparison to modern laser technology. The briefing summarizes across 100+ project documents to discuss expected use cases, technical reasons for project failure, and how modern technology can restart the development of handheld lasers. Listeners will learn, at a Dist. C level, the use cases of PHaSR, the technologies and their past and present limitations, PHaSR’s fate, and potential paths forward for handheld lasers in the use cases.
