HEL-Materials Effects Testing with Chemical Reaction Modeling
To drive material processing applications, Battelle has developed a physics-based model (Figure 1) that calculates the required energy-on-target, dwell time, and revisit schedule of the coupled HEL to carry out thermally driven chemical reactions throughout the volume of target materials. This model, and the accompanying HEL system, has been used to create high performance thermal protection system (TPS) materials by design for a variety of different input and output materials. Further testing of these materials validated their performance as predicted by the laser interaction models. This model, the accompanying instrumented HEL test system, and Battelle’s chemical and physical analysis suite offer predictive power and insights into laser-materials interactions. This presentation shares some of the effects studied to date.
