Advantages of Advanced Non-intrusive High Power RF Sensors

This presentation focuses on the PEO STRI efforts on behalf of Test Resource Management Center (TRMC) to measure various high-power radio frequency (RF) fields and their effects on military systems in support of test operations. While the major applications of these sensors are in support of Directed Energy Test Science and Technology (DET S&T), some effort was made to address Nuclear Effects Test Science and Technology (NET S&T) too. In this use non-intrusive sensors are those with minimal interaction with the RF fields measured (no or minimal conductive parts). The three RF field aspects addressed are E-field, H-field, and potential E-field, while the effects are the currents induced in conductive materials exposed to those fields. The technologies addressed to date are Electro-Optical (EO) materials and Magneto-Optical (MO) materials accessed by fiber optic cables and lasers. The NET S&T applications addressed to date are in measuring the currents induced in cables by a nuclear High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) using MO methods.
