Wargaming High Energy Laser Employment for ABCT Counter-sUAS Operations
Small UAS (Groups 1-3) are putting pressure on Armored Brigade Combat Teams (ABCTs). Many studies focus on High-Energy Laser (HEL) hardware, but fewer examine how vehicle-mounted HEL systems should be employed with maneuver units. The team built an unclassified, wargaming framework through the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Swarm Commander Tactics software to make HEL employment analysis accessible and repeatable. The hybrid approach combines human red/blue decisions within multiple sets of short simulation runs. Repetitions can elicit various outcomes a single playthrough might miss. All states and decisions are saved and logged, allowing replay and what-if variation at any point. Scenarios are maneuver-focused and allow varied enemy drone tactics, including swarms, layered attacks, and timing differences. HEL and kinetic effects use consistent open-source assumptions, keeping the emphasis on employment choices such as force composition, placement, and coordination with short-range air defense rather than hardware performance. This project does not offer performance claims. Rather, its contribution is a repeatable, NPS–hosted foundation that others can adopt to run more iterations, refine tactics, and connect promising questions to higher-fidelity or classified models.
