Tutorial on Practical Research Usage of Large Language Models in Directed Energy

Recent developments in artificial intelligence have led to proliferation of Large Language Model (LLM) technologies, such as ChatGPT, across many industries. In this talk, I will discuss some of my experiences with practical LLM usage as a research scientist. These topics include basic AI theory and fundamental Artificial Intelligence research STTR efforts, practical LLM use cases, and LLM limitations.

Discussed use cases include technical concept development, software code generation for modeling and simulation, and research document summarization. Example use case discussion will include summarization of a small business press release regarding novel thermal management material, generation of a physics simulation used in a recent publication, and exploration of Directed Energy thermal technologies for high-density cooling
.
Discussed limitations include LLM hallucinations, topic context limitations, and potential conflicts of interest between LLM developers/publishers and users.

Overall, the talk is presented in a tutorial style and is directed towards technical Government researchers without specific AI expertise. Listeners will gain understanding of the base LLM technology, applications in their work, and approaches to its practical usage.
