HEL Deployment Weather Study
High Energy Laser (HEL) weapon systems are now at a point where they’re being deployed more broadly to areas across the globe to assess their efficacy for the ground-based air defense mission. Although they have been demonstrated to be effective for this mission, the effectiveness of a HEL weapon can vary significantly based on the manner in which they are emplaced and the local weather conditions of that location. While it is infeasible to perform open-air testing to assess every laser weapon against these varied locations and conditions across the globe, The Directed Energy Weapon Mission Analysis Tool Set (DEWMATS) developed under AFMC IDO (formerly AFLCMC/XA) has been demonstrated to reasonably calculate performance predictions of HELs under various conditions and against various targets in a mission-based scenario. The approach and analysis to this Weather Study will be briefed for relevant locations.
