Electromagnetic Properties in Knitted Shielding Textiles: Effects of Coarse, Wale, and 45° Orientations

Electromagnetic shielding performance in textiles can depend strongly on structural orientation. In this work, we present measurements of shielding effectiveness and conductivity in knitted textiles tested along the coarse direction, the wale direction, and at 45° in between. Data were collected across a broad GHz frequency range, with two-dimensional plots illustrating orientation-specific variations and a three-dimensional visualization displaying the results of the tested orientations. Results suggest that rotation of the material influences its ability to block or absorb electromagnetic waves, with one direction exhibiting improved performance for certain frequencies compared to the others. This study provides insight into how knitted textile structures interact with electromagnetic waves, which may be of interest to those investigating material coatings, biological interactions, and defensive mechanisms against electromagnetic exposure.
