Evaluating High Energy Laser Performance Through Regular Testing Across Operational Conditions
Evaluating High Energy Laser (HEL) systems requires test and evaluation (T&E) methods that capture beam performance under realistic, often degraded conditions, as HEL effectiveness is heavily influenced by interacting variables such as atmospheric effects, system state, and operator ability. These variables are difficult to isolate using idealized or infrequent test approaches. This presentation describes methodologies for real-time beam characterization and their application in measuring performance across operational scenarios. It covers how these variables manifest in test data, how to detect and characterize their effects, and how systematic data collection supports identification of trends that inform system evaluation, deployment decisions, and operator training. Our adversaries will not wait for ideal conditions; T&E for directed energy systems must reflect that reality.
