DEPS supports a wide range of STEM outreach initiatives designed to introduce students and educators to the exciting world of Directed Energy. Our efforts include hosting an annual STEAM competition held in conjunction with the Annual DE Test and Evaluation Conference, and serving as a Special Award Donor by sponsoring cash awards for students participating in established STEM competitions nationwide. We also lead the Directed Energy STEM Collaboration for K–12 students, where hands on activities help build a strong foundation in physics and engineering. Through these integrated programs, DEPS works to inspire curiosity, expand access to emerging technologies, and cultivate the next generation of innovators shaping the future of Directed Energy.

DE HARNESSES THE POWER OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM

Electromagnetic energy travels in waves and spans a broad spectrum from very long radio waves to very short gamma rays. The human eye can only detect a small portion of this spectrum called visible light. A radio detects a different portion of the spectrum, and an x-ray machine uses yet another portion. NASA’s scientific instruments use the full range of the electromagnetic spectrum to study the Earth, the solar system, and the universe beyond.

By encouraging projects that explore practical, forward-thinking applications, DEPS helps students connect scientific concepts to real world challenges and imagine themselves as future contributors to the field.

DEPS STEM COLLABORATION OVERVIEW

The Directed Energy STEM Collaboration for K–12 introduces students to the exciting world of directed energy through age-appropriate lessons that spark curiosity and make complex ideas accessible. Through interactive activities exploring light, energy, magnetism, and optics, students build a strong foundation in physics and engineering while discovering how these concepts shape the technologies of tomorrow. As they advance through grade levels, learners can dive deeper into increasingly sophisticated directed energy topics.

Directed energy provides a gateway to a wide range of career pathways, from research and development to system operation, maintenance, and lifecycle support. By integrating directed energy concepts into STEM curricula, DEPS aims to give students versatile, future ready skills while inspiring the next generation of innovators.

Looking ahead, DEPS is committed to expanding the integration of directed energy topics into STEM curricula across the region, sharing the excitement and possibilities of this rapidly evolving field with the next generation. Directed energy is far more than science fiction—lasers, electromagnetic tools, and related technologies represent real, local career paths with growing demand.

BRINGING TOMORROW’S TECHNOLOGY TO TODAY’S CLASSROOMS

To help make these initiatives a reality, DEPS actively solicits proposals from educators who are eager to bring directed energy learning into their classrooms. Teachers can submit ideas for new activities, classroom demonstrations, or curriculum enhancements that align with STEM learning goals. Selected proposals may receive support, resources, or collaboration opportunities with DEPS professionals. By empowering educators to shape and tailor these experiences, DEPS ensures that directed energy education is engaging, relevant, and responsive to the needs of schools and students.
